I've got to second Grendel's Baby Blue from the Frost Amphitheatre. There's a lot of good'uns out there (like some of the earlier vintages too...) This one comes up on you & is achingly good.

As for Dylan covers, the early-vintage acoustic of Knockin on Heaven's Door been getting a lot of play here lately. LOVE this "hidden" 1978 acoustic set--and here Knockin does it for me in so many ways.

Bryan: I've read neither McNally's book nor heard that quote. It doesn't surprise me really. But check it: not only did Jerry warm but I'm also remembering that Bob ultimately expressed that Jerry was one of his favorite interpreters.

Peace, y'all.

If not his very favorite.

Don't know if it was common practice, but I saw a Knockin' On Heaven's Door encore in Louisville during which Jerry, Bob, and Brent all "knocked" in the air with closed fists. Pretty funny to watch.

I think you're right about "very favorite." It's closer to the wording I remember, but I can't find the quote & shied from the superlative. No doubt about it, though. No one covered Dylan like the Dead.

The Louisville air-knockin sounds pretty cool. Giving me brain-cramps, though, 'cuz I don't remember them doing that at Foxboro (7/4/87).

Peace.

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who did better Dylan. Of course, some guy named Jimi did a fairly decent All Along the Watchtower.

Oh wait, I'm forgetting that Nancy Sinatra version of It Ain't Me, Babe. If Not For You by Olivia Newton John has moments of great artistic depth and insight, too.

Other than those, though, the Dead's versions are right up there.

Best Knockin I ever saw was 5-30-92 9 rainbows appeared in the sky at the rear of the stadium as they broke out the Knockin.

Best Knockin'I ever heard was the 7/6/87 Pittsburgh show with the Neville's.

This is the ONLY Knockin' the Dead ever played that was not an encore.
